As a coach for individuals on the path to sobriety, I want to share with you a personal journey that may resonate with your own struggles. I remember a time when I questioned, “How do I quit drinking without going to AA? I’m not an alcoholic, I just want to stop drinking because it’s not serving a positive purpose for myself or my family”
Like many moms seeking sobriety, I sought alternative quit drinking programs and found solace in the support and guidance they offered. Wine and alcohol culture is glamorized far too much in our culture. The reality is, it dulls your senses and doesn’t necessarily support the best version of you. Plus, if you’re here, you know that you’ve had enough. And, the future sober life that you have in your head of vivid experiences, fun with your family, and less chaos – IS and can be a reality for you.
Sometimes I wish I could still drink, but I can’t.”
My coaching clients tell me this all the time. And, I want you to know that it’s okay to wish you could still drink, but it’s important to recognize that quitting doesn’t mean missing out. Sobriety opens doors to new experiences, deeper connections, and a sense of freedom that transcends the temporary pleasures of alcohol.
One of the biggest challenges I faced was socializing without alcohol. I vividly recall attending gatherings where the clinking of glasses and the laughter seemed intertwined with the drinks. It took time and effort, but I learned to enjoy these moments without alcohol, finding deeper connections and genuine joy in sober interactions.
Now, you could never get me to go back to feeling like I need wine to socialize. I crave the good feeling of a healthy body and mind way too much! Focusing on that genuine feeling of inner peace, knowing that I made the right decisions for me, and that I can fully function after an event and still get my walk in the next day- is a treasure for me. This feeling can be yours too and it makes life so much more enjoyable when you actually look forward to feeling great and making healthy decisions.
Parenting, too, presented its own set of challenges.
“Mommy wine culture” doesn’t help with sobriety.
The demands of raising children, and in my case, a daughter with special needs, can be overwhelming, and I found myself reaching for a nightly glass to unwind. But through self-reflection and support, I discovered healthier coping mechanisms that allowed me to navigate parenthood with clarity and presence. In fact, I so deeply related to the material, I decided to leave my corporate job and become a full-time coach for moms seeking sobriety as a certified Alcohol Freedom and Gray Area Drinking Coach. With social media and events in real life accepting daily wine as our “treat” after a long day of parenting, it made my decisions seem absolutely normal. And while for some, they are, I was personally tired of being tired right when I woke up, annoyed that I drank an extra glass and felt foggy, overshared, forgot to do something… you know the list.
And it was from those moments that added up, where I thought, yeah, this isn’t it. Through self-reflection and support, I discovered healthier coping mechanisms that allowed me to navigate parenthood with clarity and presence. In fact, I so deeply related to the material, I decided to leave my corporate job and become a full-time coach for moms seeking sobriety as a certified Alcohol Freedom and Gray Area Drinking Coach.
